Quote for my company

This was the quote I was able to compile with my research and was able to price what I think was necessary for their company.

Survey visit

I handed out my survey to my company on Saturday and only got around to posting now. Grade 11 sure is keeping me on the tips of my toes at all times! Well, I only managed to find 3 people working there that day that were kind enough (or not too busy anyways) to find the time and fill in my survey.

I also managed to capture a few shots of the place and it's wiring. Hopefully the results of those three people will be enough information for me to assess the company's networking standards.

That's all from me for the moment. Have a good day :-)

First Visit

Well I finally made it to Motown Taxi Spares today (my brother's workplace) but he's away this weekend and I couldn't question his networking setup. I did have a look around though, and found that he is using what looks like a network, but the amount of cables and cords intertwining around the office look like a nightmare. Perhaps I could ask questions about that in my survey. Ask if it doesn't ever get in his way (which by the looks of it I'm sure it does, not to mention the perfect nest it makes for traveling arachnids!).
My next visit should be on Tuesday when he is back and then I shall take photos and arrange my questions into their final appropriate survey form.

Hope every ones having a good holiday!

The Visit

I plan to make my first visit to my brother's work on Tuesday the 13th of march. It fits in as it is the only time I have in my daily activities that permits a visit. I have to ask his permission first though.
At first I think I'll just observe and see how everything works there. I'll draw the set up of their computers and map the functioning of everything.

My Company

The company I have found or rather decided on visiting is my brother's car parts business Motown Taxi Spares. He owns this place in town and personally I think that it's computers need lots of work regarding its set up and networking.
I believe that I'll be able to help him run a more organized business.

Eugene's Speech

Network:
What we learned...
What is a network?
- A network is a connection of computers
- We use a network to share communications such as printers, scanners etc.
What types do we get?
LAN
WAN – inter offices
What do we need to set up a network?
- Share hardware and software
- PC must have a network card to work on a network.
- Switches and hubs where they all connect
- Security and backup are very important for having a network. Backup especially when the computers unexpectedly are faced with an error
- Electrical wiring attracts lightning and it is therefore better to make use of the more --expensive, but safer fiber optic.
What type of server?
Service software (more expensive)
Windows XP
Linux (free but difficult)
- Operating system – R10 000 (5 client access licenses)
- Microsoft supplies school with free software except Windows XP etc.
- For bigger networks there are international lines under the sea
- Local internet is much cheaper
- One line off or facing trouble, can then be transferred to the other
- There is a band width which allows only a certain amount of information through
- For example: 1 Megabyte can then be sent via email and turned into 1, 5 megabytes.
- Sending many of these then can be sent and it can cause a block
- A switch is more advanced than a hub
- With a manage switch, you can see what’s happening
- You can now pinpoint errors and see what’s causing the trouble
What to remember:
- There should be backups on devices in case of such errors.
- There are also certain copyright and piracy laws
- If a package is purchased the packaging number and the number on the PC bind and it then cannot work on any other PC
- This number is sent to Microsoft
- Pastel etc. all have license agreements but there are some programs that are free and accept donations such as Adobe
- Computer Visage policy
- Organization

We also got to have an inside look at how exactly the networks at the NCC worked and where set up. They have special rooms for the different parts of their networks and hardware

Introduction to the CAT class.

I took Computer Applications Technology for the love of the computer and my interest in animation, photo manipulation and visual effects. Every day is a new quest in the land of computer and I try to take things as they come.
We were asked to design a blogspot and here it is. As students in computer since grade 8, we have covered Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Inspiration and delve into other things that I don't think other schools come close! (such as blogging) :-)
Well, thats all from me today, so bye bye
